This allegedly No 1 1-Ton Land-Rover Series III. It is fitted with the wrong door hinges. The 'J' registration, VN plate issued at Middlesbrough between 1 August 1970 and 31 July 1971 indicates a Series IIA and the door hinges are IIA door hinges. Yes, I know they are easily changed and completely interchangeable with the Series III door hinges. But, it is laughable to suggest that The Rover Company were 'using up' the Series IIA door hinges on the first Series III models. How do I know? I was there. I never saw one Series III Land-Rover of any variant fitted with Series IIA door hinges. The Series IIA door hinges continued in production for years after the introduction of the Series III door hinges as service replacements for the models for which they were intended.

The 1st 1-Ton Land-Rover. I doubt it. Series III were introduced in October 1971. Therefore they all have 'K' registration and onwards number plates. What happened to the registration number of this vehicle? Don't tell me Graham's vehicle is a 'test' model registered by The Rover Company prior to the launch. VN is a Middlesbrough/Teesside/Cleveland registration. The Rover Company are not going to licence one test model at Teesside licensing office. VN and PY were North Yorkshire registration letters emanating from Northallerton. From 1968 onwards county boundaries were re-shuffled and VN and PY were issued from Middlesbrough licensing office along with XG and DC. North of the River Tees, Stockton-on-Tees came under Durham licensing office (UP and PT) and with the boundary changes Stockton vehicle dealers used the Middlesbrough licensing office. So, I doubt that this 'J' registration 1-Ton is original. Is this VN number the original number? If not, what is it and why

Wayne,
25112419C is not a 1-Ton chassis number and the military did not use 1-Tons. It is probably a GS 109" which had the lifted suspension but is otherwise the same as normal 3/4 Ton 109".
